Straightening Your Teeth – Is Invisalign the Best Option?
Invisalign, also known as clear aligners, are transparent orthodontic devices that are used to adjust teeth. These can be used to successfully treat crooked, misaligned or protruding teeth. Invisalign resembles the plastic trays that are used to whiten teeth. It is a preferred alternative to metal braces and fits snugly over the teeth. They are virtually invisible and are removable, offering more convenience than braces.

How Is Invisalign Different from Traditional Braces?
Both traditional braces and Invisalign help straighten your teeth, thereby improving your smile and appearance. However, they work in different ways. Braces comprise of metal or clear brackets, which are glued to the teeth. These individual brackets are connected together using wires and rubber bands. Some people, particularly children, find it embarrassing to wear as these change their appearance. In such cases, Invisalign has a significant advantage. It is transparent and does not cause much change to the appearance during the time of treatment. The aligners are designed to precisely match each patient’s dental needs to make sure they fit properly.
How Long Is the Treatment?
The length of the Invisalign treatment may differ based on individual needs. It takes around 6 months for some patients while for others it can last up to 18 months. This is comparatively lesser than traditional braces, which generally take 2 years. While braces have to be worn at all times, Invisalign can be removed while eating, drinking and brushing your teeth and re-inserted.
One of the biggest advantages Invisalign offers is easy maintenance. Food particles often get caught in the brackets of traditional metal braces as they can’t be removed while eating. This makes cleaning difficult. While wearing braces, you have to brush and floss between each bracket to avoid tooth decay. There is also a greater chance of contracting gum disease as the brackets make it difficult to brush along the gum line. On the other hand, Invisalign is removable. You can brush and floss your teeth normally and just have to clean the aligner trays before reinserting them.
The aligner trays have to be changed about every 2 weeks. Most of the dentists these days provide up to 3 aligner trays per visit so you can schedule a follow-up every 6 weeks. Traditional braces require a follow-up visit once every month.
Patients using Invisalign do not experience any tenderness from wired brackets and can eat all their favorite foods. They also don’t have to undergo the discomfort associated with the monthly tightening of metal brackets and wires. Although Invisalign offers some clear benefits, it is not appropriate for use in patients with very complex dental issues.
